This is the first time in many years that the council has run the Sports Star of the Year Awards, an awards night which has inspired great interest within the community.

The Shire of Ashburton Senior Sports Star of the Year for 2007-2008 was awarded to Krystal Morton of Paraburdoo for her involvement and dedication to improving Women's Softball within the town and the Shire of Ashburton.

Applications this year were of very high standard and were judged by a panel of five judges appointed by the Shire of Ashburton from various towns and with different involvements with the shire and its communities.

DSR Manager Pilbara Nick Sloan said within the four towns that made up the Shire of Ashburton, there was exceptional sporting talent, both in senior levels and junior levels in all sports.

"This talent should be recognised and rewarded," he said. "The way to do this is to nominate these people for this award.

"We hope to receive more nominees for next year's Sports Star of the Year Awards to make the evening even bigger and better."
