The academy’s football program will begin with introduction sessions in December and full training in January next year.

There will be squads based in Bunbury, Australind, Busselton and Manjimup consisting of players who turn 15 and 16 years of age.

Harper said he was excited with the new position, adding he couldn’t wait to get started.

‘‘This newset up through the SWAS gives young athletes a great chance in their careers,’’ Harper said.

‘‘We’re currently in the process of finalising our squads and trying to find coaches.

‘‘Once that’s in place, we can begin bulk training, but not only will we be training skills, but also looking at educating athletes on nutrition and the effects of drugs and alcohol.

‘‘It is an exciting time for football in the South West.’’

SWAS chief executive officer Bernice Butlion said AFL was a huge sport in the region, and believed Dylan’s experience would be an asset to the academy’s program.

‘‘We are very happy with his appointment,’’ Butlion said.

‘‘He really understands football, and being a talented player himself, I’m sure he’ll bring a lot to the academy.

‘‘Overall, there has been a fantastic support basis for the fourmain sporting codes and I believe the academy will grow extensively over the next few months.’’

This week the SWAS will be advertising their individual scholarships, with athletes from all sports outside the four codes to be considered provided they meet selection criteria.
