Goldfields Sports Star of the Year Awards
Swimmer and beach volleyball player extraordinaire Casey Grice had his day in the sun recently, claiming the prestigious Goldfields Sports Star of the Year Award for 2008.
29 January 2009
Grice took out the honour among some tough competition – a field of seven senior finalists – at a ceremony at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall on Friday 14 November 2008.
This has been a great year for Grice, whose performance at the Olympic trials in Sydney saw him complete personal-best times in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.
Hockey player Izaac Rowatt was awarded the Rising Sports Star of the Year Award, the win coming nearly 30 years after his father had claimed the same honour. At just 16 years of age, Rowatt claimed the O'Shaughnessy Medal as the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association's A1 men's fairest and best player.
The Disabled Sports Star of the Year award went to Ian Smallhorn, a consistent performer whose major achievements over the past two years have included winning a gold medal and two silvers in swimming at the Special Olympics Australia National Games.
Geoff Horsley was recognised as Masters Sports Star of the Year and Graeme Davis for Service to Sport.
