Slam dunk for Gascoyne career hopefuls

A partnership between The Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and Carnarvon TAFE is a slam dunk for people in the Gascoyne region who are seeking careers in the sport and recreation industry.

The "Slam Dunk" program provides education and training to help those interested build career pathways. It does this through the delivery of courses in Certificate I, II and III in Sport and Recreation with pathways to university studies in Sport and Recreation and Human Movement.

DSR Manager Gascoyne  Salvatore Siciliano said the "Slam Dunk" partnership was possibly the Gascoyne's most exciting project when it came to developing people in the region.

"People often approach us asking for employment within our office or the industry, but previously there was no document career pathway that people could follow, it was very much ad-hoc," Mr Siciliano said.

"We now have a career path that clearly outlines the various options for employment and training within the sport and recreation industry.

"The partnership will also highlight the need for people to be trained if they wish to work in sport and recreation and we hope that this program will have a positive impact on the youth of the Gascoyne region when choosing a career and study options."

Through the partnership, avenues are being sourced to expand on the delivery of courses, which will enhance the pathways. There is also the possible avenue of school-based traineeships in sport and recreation.

DSR's role in the partnership will include provision of industry advice on the needs of sport and recreation in the region for the development of the course curriculum and placement of students to work as volunteers in clubs and community sport and recreation events.
