What makes a good trail?
Tips for making good trails.
17 October 2008
A "good" trail is likely to have the following characteristics:- Easy access including relatively secure car parking or location close to public transport.
- Shade, water, toilets and other essential amenities at the trailhead.
- Well planned, designed, constructed, maintained and promoted.
- Clear interpretative material which may be web-based or signs on trailhead or at other locations on the trail.
- If necessary, provide brochures and maps (especially if no trailhead or web information is available).
- If necessary, be adequately marked to allow users to follow routes.
- Be varied and of interest or challenging for intended users.
- "Adopted" and supported by the community, including residents, local government and small business.
- Significant environmental, cultural, heritage or other points of interest are indicated.
NB:A “good” trail may be of varying technical difficulty or challenge, soit is important that some indication of the “classification” – i.e. 1(easy) up to 5/6 (very difficult and only for the experienced) – isprovided. It's also helpful if the approximate time to complete andfitness level required are provided.
