Career profile – Victor Bellotti
Indigenous Sport Development Officer Pilbara
11 September 2008
Victor Bellotti is the latest person to join the Department of Sport and Recreation team after grabbing with both hands the opportunity to be our Indigenous Sport Development Officer (ISDO) for the Pilbara region.
At 24 years of age, Victor joined the department after working his way up to the position of Swimming Pool Manager at the Burringurrah Community, which he filled for two-and-a-half years. He had previously completed a two year stint at Challenge Stadium in Perth, which included a part-time supervising role.
“My people are from the Shark Bay/Carnarvon area and I recently moved to Perth fromCarnarvon to look for a job and play a bit of footy,” Victor said.
“I played in Carnarvon from a young age, had a kick in the WAFL with Peel Thunder and have also played a lot of country footy.”
Victor’s career in the sport and recreation industry was kick-started by an Australian Football Commission (AFC) Sports Ready Traineeship, which he applied for after seeing a newspaper advertisement.
After securing a traineeship, Victor completed his Certificate II and III in Community Recreation in the ‘aquatics’ stream, which saw him achieve his Pool Lifeguard Certificate, Senior First Aid Certificate, Bronze Medallion and Pool Operator’s Ticket.
His new role with DSR has Victor travelling the Pilbara in a bid to get more Indigenous people from the region
involved in sport and recreation and adopting healthy lifestyles.
Victor says the most important attributes for someone wanting to pursue a career as an ISDO include being a
“people” person, a good talker and easy-going. They must also like to travel.
“There’s a lot of driving involved, so far I’ve gone to places such as Roebourne, Onslow and Port Hedland,
visiting people and networking,” Victor said. “A large part of my role in the future will be organising and
running programs to get more people involved in sport and recreation.”
Victor says he would recommend a career in the industry to other young Indigenous people wanting to
turn their love of sport and recreation into a career. “It’s a great line of work and a great opportunity to be
doing something you love and are interested in,” he said. “It’s a very rewarding job.”
